How not to write press releases
I recently got an e-mail from a company whose product we use in our software, announcing a new product that they are offering. I understand the need to come across as delivering high quality products, but some of the language used in this e-mail was just plain ridiculous:
“The WebRenderer Swing Edition will forever change the face of Java Swing applications and the rendering of web content within Java and could be one of the most significant Swing developments since Swing inception“, said Anthony Scotney, CEO of JadeLiquid Software.
[emphasis mine]
Claims like the ones in bold above come off as pompous, arrogant, and boastful. Lets ask the Swing developers what they think the most significant Swing developments have been — I bet they wouldn’t even mention WebRenderer, especially since it’s not freely available to everyone.
I’m not saying WebRenderer is a bad product; it’s quite good, in fact. I just don’t like being told by the CEO of the company that makes a product how amazing and wonderful that product is. Bias, anyone? I say, let the customers do the talking. It’s far more persuasive.

Thank you.

I apologize. This post was written before I looked into Creative Commons and I’m sorry for using your photo. It has been removed and replaced with a different one (licensed under CC).
Eventually I will go through my older posts and remove all the restricted images.
